For the last 10 years, UCSF Department of Laboratory Medicine researchers, led by Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, have beta-tested a new way to ID rare and new pathogens, and they say it's ready for use worldwide. It could speed treatment for patients with brain diseases and sound an early alarm for the next pandemic. Credit: Chiu Lab https://tiny.ucsf.edu/mCFT4N | UCSF

This cancer cell is trapped in walls made of blue light, thanks to a new technique invented by UCSF researchers. The Wittmann lab used light-sensitive proteins from oat plants to make this human cancer cell sensitive to light. The cell is unable to extend the thin filaments of its skeletal structure, called microtubules, to stretch and pull itself beyond the box. This new tool could revolutionize the way scientists study cell biology. | UCSF

The two COVID-19 vaccines being distributed across the US are special not only because of the focus and cooperation required to get them into clinics quickly, but because they represent a new class of medicine: the first approved drugs of any kind based on mRNA. Where traditional vaccines use inactive viruses, the new vaccines deliver protein-building instructions that help train the immune system to fight the actual virus. But getting the mRNA into the cell is a whole other challenge. Watch the

An exciting discovery from UCSF and Cedars-Sinai researchers could be the first step toward growing human organs from scratch, a long-time goal of regenerative medicine! They identified cells that can be programmed to prompt other stem cells to form rudimentary, organ-like structures — including one that contracts like a beating heart. "These engineered 'organizer' cells could someday enable us to repair and replace organs in the patients (who) need it," UCSF's Wendell Lim says. Learn more ➡️ ht
