If you've never seen one of our chip pan demonstrations, here's a video of what happens when you put water on an oil fire from Firefighter Ben Andrews at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station's open day in the summer. Many of us cook with oil at home and oil can quickly get too hot and catch alight. If your oil starts to smoke that means it's getting too hot, please take your pan off the heat if it is safe to do so. If your pan or chip pan does catch fire, turn off the heat if it is safe to do so.
