A view of the powerful storm that will move in over our warm air today, triggering possible severe thunderstorms in Western Washington. ⛈️ The instability created by the temperature difference at the surface vs the cold & showery air aloft could produce rare PNW supercells. #WAwx | Shannon O'Donnell KOMO

Here comes the SUN again: the atmospheric pendulum is swinging wildly this week--the only consistency being the inconsistence! We hit our first 80s of the year in Seattle on Wednesday, only to see a feisty May cold front bring in rain, wind and cool temperatures in the 50s and 60s on Thursday. For Friday, we'll be right back to bright and blue with highs in the 70s to low 80s as high pressure grows over the region yet again. And yet again...that won't last long either. Another front pulls into P

In a month of spooky weekend storms, this past one was the most frightening yet. After a soaker of a Friday courtesy of an "atmospheric river," the follow up storm on Saturday included howling winds that knocked out power lines as well as drought-weakened tree branches. Finally, the cold burst behind that brought down snow levels into the passes on Sunday, making for white-knuckled driving over Snoqualmie or Stevens if you dared make the trek! Thankfully, back-to-work Monday served up a break be

Low pulling in gusts now to 70 mph in Hoquiam/Aberdeen. The pair of 47 mph blows in Seattle & Everett accompanied the squall line that brought heavy rain, hail and lightning to the north Sound in the 6 pm hour. Still plenty of gusts to go as the low moves inland tonight! #WAwx | Shannon O'Donnell KOMO

Another night, another storm! Spring tried to take the baton today, but winter wrestled it back just in time for the evening commute. As promised, we battled heavy rain, gusty winds, pockets of hail and rumbles of thunder and lightning just when everyone was hitting the highway to head back home. Up in the mountains, this heavy precipitation is translating into more heavy mountain snow, and the WINTER STORM WARNING/WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES will continue for the Cascades through Saturday morning

We are a week into February, and what a week it's been! We've seen cold air and areas of snow since the month began, and we'll hold onto both as we head into the weekend. Another weak disturbance is curling into Western Washington tonight, and as the moisture hits that cold air, we'll pull down more scattered snow showers over the next 24 hours. Once again, accumulations will vary greatly, with the vast majority of us seeing a trace or less of fresh snowfall. However, a few of us could pile up 1

The finale of April was sure a looker: blue skies made for a brighter and warmer day, and highs headed up into the low 60s around the Sound, which was near normal for this time of year. However, May Day will be even warmer, with a ridge of high pressure building quickly along the west coast on Thursday. This will keep us clear and will coax in a mild, dry northeasterly breeze, which will push temperatures up into the low to middle 70s around the metro area. Some communities near the foothills or

We're cruising into the tail end of March with weather twists and turns all week long. First up? A "warm wave" that will bring on the highest temperatures of the year. We'll see highs around 70 in Seattle on Tuesday, with some locations around the Sound stretching into the middle 70s. Close to Portland, afternoon temperatures on Tuesday will hover near 80 degrees. This will easily be warm enough for record high temperatures for March 25th. However, the surge of warmth will meet a violent turn by

March is here--late winter weather. But where is the late winter rain? We are running quite behind the curve for our usual precipitation. Since the first of January, Sea-Tac Airport is over four and a half inches behind normal, as we've only picked up 5.41" of rain so far in 2025. The snowpack is looking lean too, with the Central Cascades region at only 62% of the usual amounts between Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes for this time of year. Time to remedy that! We'll make up a bit for the deficits

The final winter weekend is here, and before the season says goodbye, it's going to give us one last blast of its stormy best. A WINTER STORM WARNING will go into place Saturday through Sunday to account for the 12 to 18 inches of new snow expected over the Cascades. The snow level will hover around 2,000', which is far enough below Snoqualmie Summit to ensure that I-90's pass will be a slippery mess at times during the storm. If you have have Cascade-crossing plans in mind this weekend, prepare

Our Stella Sun KOMO with the forecast discussion tonight! *** For the first time since 1999, the National Weather Service Seattle Office issued a severe thunderstorm watch through King county Wednesday afternoon and evening. A thunderstorm is considered "severe" when the cell is capable of producing wind gusts over 58mph, hail 1" or greater, and a chance for tornado development. While there were no severe thunderstorms reported in the Seattle metro area, over by the Olympics, a cell produced hai

Rain, rain, here to stay! After a dry and chilly first few weeks of February, we are rounding the corner toward the finish line decidedly more damp. An atmospheric river is steering in our direction this weekend, and it will pump up the precipitation along with the temperatures and snow levels. As promised, Friday ended on a soggy note, with an extra rainy evening commute. Highs hovered near 50, which is still near normal for this time of year. However, a plume of intense moisture extending back

We still have a weak La Niña in place, and it's about to deliver the "cooler temps/steady mountain snow" scenario that we've come to expect in the Pacific Northwest during such events. While our snow pack is still looking a bit lean, the sky will do its best to coat the Cascades with some late season winter white before the season is over. A disturbance pushing through overnight will drop significant snow over the mountains through Thursday. As such, the National Weather Service put out a WINTER

May Day *had* held the title for the "warmest day yet of 2025," but May 7th took the crown today: Seattle came up to 77 degrees at the airport, making it one degree warmer than we were last Thursday. It was a beautiful day to get outdoors and soak up Northwest living at its finest, from lunch on the patio at Alderbrook to a hike at Deception Pass State Park. Alki Beach was packed with people eating fish and chips and grilling at the beach, too! It was definitely a nice little summer preview. How

After some weather twists and turns this week, we're back to our regularly schedule late March programming. The Mariners kicked off their 2025 season with a win under a closed roof, protecting the fans and players from a steady spring rain falling at T-Mobile Park at game time. But it didn't protect everyone from the chill: cool and gusty conditions still make sitting in the stadium a teeth-shattering venture this time of year, so be sure to dress warmly if you're heading out to the games this w

A breezy late spring disturbance pushed through Puget Sound Wednesday, kicking up southwesterly winds in Western Washington from 25 to 35 mph, and kicking up gusts to nearly 50 mph east of the Cascade crest. As such, fire danger there ramped up, and a RED FLAG WARNING was issued due to the higher fire danger. The fire danger isn't just high because of the wind, but because much of the Evergreen State is considered at least "dry," if not in "moderate drought." Not only did we wrap up the winter s
