After 3 years of waiting our madder root is ready to harvest. This root has been used for centuries as a natural dye source. The dye extracted from the root can produce a range of colors, from oranges, pinks to deep reds. In our latest eco printing session, we used the madder root fresh so it provided a peachy/orange color. I love the pigments that we extracted from the various leaf sources. Today I was fine turning my madder root watercolour recipe for my upcoming book! As you paint makers know, each batch can produce different results but today’s pigment was a lovely & rich red. Madder likes a certain temperature during dye extraction (to produce the best red shades) so I was experimenting with different batches extracted at different temperatures. To fix this blunder, we took the bad batch and some other clothes with a pale look to them and re-dyed the whole lot with walnut shells. We used the same amount of dried shells as dry weight fabric. The shells were soaked in clean water overnight. The clothes were treated with alun and 2% ferrous sulfate as mordant before dyeing. The clothes s
