Why the Union issued light blue trousers but dark blue jackets?
Aug 25, 2012 · Apparently many Maine soldiers preferred dark blue trousers to the sky-blue kersey wool trousers. The entire U.S. infantry uniform in the Mexican War had been sky blue, albeit with white linen or cotton fatigues authorized for wear in extreme heat.

The most striking difference between the roundabout and the mounted jacket was the was roundabouts jackets had 9 buttons and were cut square at the waist, while mounted jackets had 12 buttons and were pointed in the front and back.

Jul 30, 2024 · Seems quite reasonable. One issue to consider is that uniforms fade so it is possible the gators were black but faded. At least one Confederate zouave unit has blue jackets that seem to have faded to brown. All speculation but I think you have come up with the best possible description based on available information.

Aug 25, 2012 · It appears that the Columbus Depot may have supplied 263,000 jackets. Some apparently had blue collars and cuffs, while some had blue collar and untrimmed cuffs. It appears that artillery and cavalry may have received jackets with blue trim, and that red or yellow trimmed Columbus jackets may not have existed.

And infantrymen in full uniform late 1863, wearing the sky-blue 1861 pattern trousers... During the War the full dress uniform, as shown above, was not popular and not often entirely worn.

From the "Kedge Anchor" (1855) we received notice that US Navy vessels carried for slops only the pea jackets by that time (the recruits recieved already having recieved their blue cloth jackets on receiving ships, etc.)
