Giant kelp adults have a conical, branched, root-like structure called a holdfast that attaches the alga to a hard substrate, most often rock. The holdfast gives rise to a network of thin stipes (analogous to plant stems) with up to 400 blade-bearing fronds (Figures 1-1a and 1-2a).
