Unity State, also known as Western Upper Nile, [3] is a state in South Sudan. Unity State is in the Greater Upper Nile region. Unity is inhabited predominantly by two ethnic groups: the Nuer majority, and the Dinka minority.

From April to September 2015, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and associated militias rampaged through southern Unity state in the most destructive campaign of South Sudan’s civil war so far.

The Greater Unity area comprises 9 Counties including Pariang and Abienmhom in northern part; Rubkona and Guit in central region; and, Koch, Mayendit, Leer and Panyjiar in the southern side; and Mayom in the north-west region. Unity area borders Sudan to the north, Lakes State to the south, Western Bar El Ghazal to west, and Jonglei to the East.
