The Yamaha RD500LC is a high-performance, two-stroke sports motorcycle, also known as the RZ500 in Canada and Australia. A lightened but detuned version known as the RZV500R was developed for the Japanese home market.

Like the OW, the RZ has an aluminum chassis, a V-four, two-stroke, water-cooled, reed-valve engine, a sideloader gearbox, Power Valve cylinders, magnesium side cases, and, above all, the look of the $1000-a-pound missile which rolled so very carefully to European start grids.

Jan 29, 2012 · Yamaha RD500LC Model history. The RD500 isn’t a true V-four, but rather two 180-degree crankshafts taken from the TZR250 and arranged so the cylinders sit 50 degrees apart. This layout requires a power-sapping balance shaft simply to iron out the sharp and high intensity vibrations as the revs build up and isn’t the ideal configuration.

May 2, 2019 · Kenny’s bike was a true single-crank V4, where the RD500 was essentially a pair of 250cc twin-cylinder engines, each with its own crankshaft, linked by a central mainshaft. Yamaha’s YPVS powervalve system added low-rev driveability as did the use of reed valve induction (the race bikes used disc valves).
