Since the virus is transmitted via liquid, it could live indefinitely by simply going dormant until a new host becomes available. So 28 Months/Years later would have to have a new outbreak, due to mishandling of a corpse, drinking untreated water, swimming/bathing in a body of water, etc.

Ok For sure they should have done 28 months later like 3-4 years after 28 weeks later but those bloody bastards didnt. So now we would only be like 6 years away in real life from 28 years later.
