A rainbow crosswalk in Orlando, built to honor the 49 victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting, has been painted over by Florida's Department of Transportation.

"We are devastated to learn that overnight the state painted over the Pulse Memorial crosswalk on Orange Avenue," the mayor said.

A top state transportation official said in June that any art on streets must be devoid of political messages.
