The United Kingdom announced an indefinite ban on the use of puberty blockers for those under the age of 18 years with gender dysphoria, except in clinical trials. The decision formalizes temporary restrictions imposed earlier this year.

The British government has indefinitely banned puberty blockers for children with gender dysphoria after independent experts found there was an unacceptable safety risk in prescribing the medication.

Any sale or supply of the drugs, known as puberty blockers, through private U.K.-based prescribers for the treatment of gender incongruence or dysphoria in some minors is prohibited until further notice, the U.K.’s Department of Health and Social Care said in a press release.
