As Mercedes-Benz prepares to add NACS ports to new models this year, the automaker is opening access to the Tesla Supercharger network for its existing EVs. US Mercedes-Benz EV drivers will be able to charge their cars at over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers in the US and Canada.

But compatibility with Tesla's charging network—which Benz says swells the number of available fast chargers for its customers by 20,000 in the U.S. and Canada combined—depends on more than just a similar plug design.

Mercedes-Benz said that its electric vehicles will be able to access Tesla’s Supercharger network starting in February.

That means the industry-wide rollout could also be complete around that time, opening up nearly 18,000 public charging options to all non-Teslas, with an adapter to start.

Electric Benz drivers in the US can use the chargers from February, but although the company will switch to NACS ports on new cars, existing owners need a $185 adapter
