Kilauea’s latest eruption episode in Halemaumau crater has come to an abrupt halt, geologists said today. The lava fountains that began Monday evening stopped by 10:47 a.m. today, marking the end of the seventh lava flow episode in the on-again, off-again summit eruption that started Dec. 23.

Episode 7 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at Kīlauea began at 6:41 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27 and is currently feeding a lava flow onto the crater floor.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has a YouTube live feed of the eruption taken from a safe distance that shows the full lava flow into the caldera, which at night (as it is as of the time of this article being published due to Hawaii's time difference) illuminates brilliantly.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that fountains on the north side of the crater are now reaching heights of 100 to 120 feet (30 to 40 metres) and feeding multiple streams of lava. Additionally, a smaller fountain is visible on the south side, accompanied by a small emerging lava flow.

The volcano erupted for the seventh time in recent weeks. This round is expected to last between 10 to 20 hours, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
