The steady lake-effect snow that was overspreading a big section of the state will continue across some areas into Wednesday morning. There will also be heavier bursts of snow creating more low-visibility issues that caused accidents and highway shutdowns earlier today.

Western New York is currently under a lake snow effect warning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The snowfall will cause slippery road conditions, which will impact commuters on Wednesday evening.

Lake-effect snow has dropped as much as 24 inches of snow in parts of New York, as some areas of the state are expected to receive an additional 1-2 feet of snow. Jan. 14, 2025.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Sunday that crews across the state were getting into position to deal with the snow.

Several more inches of lake effect snow are likely to coat roads today in Central New York. Three to 4 inches are expected during the day as bands of lake effect snow flow in from Lake Ontario. A winter weather advisory remains in place until 1 a.

Parts of western New York received 2 feet of snow from multiple rounds of lake-effect snow this week. Lake-effect snow warnings remain in effect for some of these same areas through Thursday.
