By Philip O'Connor ZURICH (Reuters) -England came into the Women's Euros as reigning champions and promptly fell into a trap set for them by a cunning French side who ruthlessly exploited their errors en route to a 2-1 Group D win on Saturday that puts the Lionesses in a precarious position after their opening game.

US manager Emma Hayes said they were bullied by the French while former England player Karen Carney claimed they looked like a team who had not played together. Both were fair assessments. The Lionesses are the first defending champions to lose their opening match at a Euros and this was also Sarina Wiegman’s first defeat in the competition.
