The Philadelphia Flyers introduced Rick Tocchet as the 25th head coach in franchise history on Friday, bringing home a fan favorite and one of the NHL’s most respected hockey minds to guide the team through its critical next phase.

The team announced on its web site late Wednesday afternoon what multiple sources had informed earlier in the day, that the Flyers had hired one of their former star players, Rick Tocchet, as the new bench boss. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli was the first to break the story.

Shaw, 61, was a finalist for the Flyers' head coaching job after serving as interim coach after John Tortorella was fired on March 27.
