An initiative aimed at supporting drivers with autism is now officially available statewide, the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminded motorists in a news release Tuesday. Drivers on the autism spectrum can now sign up for the Blue Envelope program,

Cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca, and Cortland counties have introduced a new program aimed at creating safer and more inclusive traffic stops. The Blue Envelope Program was designed for officers to identify neurodivergent drivers quickly during a stop.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is adopting the Blue Envelope program, a safety program for drivers with autism.

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island DMV is reminding drivers that the “Blue Envelope” program has gone into effect. Blue Envelope improves communication between law enforcement and drivers with autism. They can be used to communicate any accommodations police may need to make during a traffic stop.

The Blue Envelope Program is designed to make interactions with law enforcement much less stressful during traffic stops. This safety initiative is designed for drivers with autism. Sheriffs across the state and advocates for autism awareness came together to share why this program is a great example of being more inclusive.

The program seeks to help driving adults with autism. The program allows adult drivers with autism to obtain a blue envelope and have them keep their license, registration, insurance card or other relevant documents in it. An officer or deputy who pulls a driver over will see the blue envelope and is alerted that the driver has autism.
