The Justice Department late on Wednesday asked a U.S. appeals court to reject an emergency bid by TikTok to temporarily block a law that would require its Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest the short-video app by Jan.

TikTok is now facing a ban if it doesn’t divest from ByteDance. The ruling could be appealed to the Supreme Court before the ban takes effect on January 19. A U.S. federal appeals court ruled on Friday in favor of upholding a law requiring China-based ByteDance to divest its popular short video app TikTok in the United States by early next year or face a ban.

The video-sharing app has been given an ultimatum to break ties with its China-based parent company by mid-January - or face being blocked in the US.

Attorneys for TikTok and its China-based parent company, ByteDance, are expected to appeal to the Supreme Court.

TikTok must now move quickly with a request to the Supreme Court to block or overturn a law that would require its Chinese parent ByteDance to divest of the short-video app by Jan. 19 after an appeals court on Friday rejected a bid for more time.

TikTok faces a US ban next month after an appeals court declined to pause the measure, which takes effect if the popular video-sharing app isn’t sold by its China-based parent ByteDance Ltd.
