Israel says a Hamas list shows that eight of the 33 hostages to be released in the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire are dead.

The hostages are the second set to be released since the multiphase agreement came into effect, raising hopes for a lasting end to the war.

Some troops had been expected to withdraw to allow hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans to go home. But Israel said the hostage exchange before that step had not gone as agreed. Hamas accused Israel of stalling.

Government spokesman David Mencer told journalists Monday that Hamas said the other 25 are alive. Israel overnight said it had received a list of information on the status of the hostages from Hamas.

Delayed by a dispute over the release of a specific hostage, an agreement has been reached to allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza.

Israeli hostages Liri Albag, Naama Levy, Karina Ariev and Daniella Gilboa were freed by Hamas on Saturday, while 200 Palestinian prisoners were released, Israel said.
