Whooping cough cases are soaring. Can infecting people help test a better vaccine?
Whooping cough is surging in the United States, with cases now five times higher than they were at the same point last year, according to preliminary data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that was reported Friday.
State reporting 'significant increase' in whooping cough cases
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is reporting a significant increase in the number of pertussis, or whooping cough, cases in the state. DHS is urging residents and their children to get up to date on their pertussis vaccine.
As of September 12, there have been 708 cases of pertussis in Minnesota, according to MDH. Last year there were 61.
The total number of cases reported to the state has reached 286, the most since the last epidemic of 2012. Public health officials say case numbers are rising in Anchorage, but falling statewide.
