SB Nation on MSNNolan McLean promoted; Paul Blackburn designated for assignment
Ahead of his big league debut this afternoon against the Mariners, the Mets promoted Nolan McLean from Triple-A Syracuse. In a corresponding move, Paul Blackburn was designated for assignment. Blackburn will have to pass through waivers to remain in the Mets organization.
As expected, McLean will make his MLB debut Saturday, toeing the rubber as the Mets' starting pitcher. The 23-year-old has logged a 2.99 ERA and a 97:38 K:BB in 87.1 innings for Syracuse this season. He's posted a 1.96 ERA and a 26:9 K:BB across 23 innings spanning his last four appearances.
Roupp missed most of 2023 and spent much of 2024 in the bullpen, throwing just 76 2/3 innings, making one wonder how he was going to hold up as a full-time starter for the Giants this season. He was already up to 101 1/3 innings -- just six off his career high from 2022 -- when he went on the IL last month with elbow inflammation.
The Mets could use some big-time help, so who better to call upon than a guy occasionally called Cowboy Ohtani?
