At least 34 people were killed and 43 injured when Cyclone Chido smashed into three northern provinces of Mozambique on Sunday and Monday. The head of the country’s disaster management agency says the numbers are preliminary, as rescue teams search through rubble.

Just last year, Mozambique was left reeling from Cyclone Freddy, one of the longest-lived storms ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere, if not the whole world. More than 180 in the country were killed, the World Meteorological Organization said.

At least 34 people have been killed by Cyclone Chido in Mozambique since it made landfall there on Sunday, the U.N. humanitarian agency OCHA said on Tuesday, citing figures from the southern African country's disaster agency.
