MISSION VIEJO — Mater Dei’s football team capped an undefeated season and sealed a likely national title by defeating De La Salle 37-15 in the CIF State Open Division final on Saturday night.

The Monarchs win their second back-to-back championships with two fourth-quarter scores against Concord De La Salle on Saturday night.

No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) survived a second-half surge from No. 21 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) to win California's Open Division championship 37-15 on Saturday night at Saddleback College. It's the fifth state championship since 2017 for the Monarchs, who likely will earn their third MaxPreps National Championship.

Mater Dei scores two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away for a second straight state Open Division title and fifth overall.

Mike Goebel is retiring as the Mater Dei football coach, school administration confirmed to the Courier & Press on Sunday. He went 270-93 across 28 seasons at his alma mater. The Wildcats won two state championships under his watch. Goebel leaves a legacy unmatched by many in Southwestern Indiana.
