The Indian government is set to introduce a constitutional amendment bill for simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections. The bill will likely be referred to a joint parliamentary committee for review and wider consultations.

Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, are now expected to be introduced on Tuesday, suggest reports.

Based on the recommendations of a committee chaired by former president Ram Nath Kovind, the Bills set out the process for moving towards simultaneous elections to Parliament and state legislatures.

Both Bills, approved by the Union Cabinet last week, are based on recommendations by the High-Level Committee on One Nation One Election, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

Earlier, the two bills—The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill)—were listed for introduction in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
