Thomas Gudinas was executed Tuesday in Florida, for the 1994 rape and murder of a woman, hours after the U.S. Supreme Court denied an appeal from his attorneys who argued he was too mentally ill to be put to death.

Thomas Lee Gudinas, 51, was executed by lethal injection. Gudinas was convicted of killing in the May 1994 murder of Michelle McGrath. Investigators say he attacked McGrath in a parking lot after she left Barbarella’s bar in Orlando around closing time. He was found to have followed her before raping and beating her to death.

Michelle McGrath was last seen at a Central Florida bar called Barbarella’s shortly before 3 a.m. on May 24, 1994. Her body was found with evidence of serious trauma and sexual assault in an alley
