Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party won elections in the sprawling megacity of Delhi for the first time in 27 years on Saturday, defeating one of his most prominent critics in a much-needed boost after losing its national majority last year.

Modi’s BJP secured a landslide victory in Delhi, unseating Arvind Kejriwal and reclaiming power from AAP in the capital after 25 years.

The BJP is expected to win 48 of the 70-member legislative assembly, where it is leading, according to the Election Commission of India’s website. The party is reclaiming Delhi after almost three decades.

Control of the assembly in New Delhi is set to change hands, a feat that eluded the Indian prime minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party for nearly three decades.

After the Hindu nationalists' narrow victory in the spring 2024 general election, their return to control of the capital indicates that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity remains intact.

As per the Election Commission of India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading on 41 seats, while AAP in 29 constituencies in the early trends of vote counting. Congress seems to fail to open its account again.
