The U.S. declared independence from Great Britain 249 years ago – on July 4, 1776. Independence Day gatherings were a little different in those days, and so was the weather.

The tavern's first incarnation lasted about 60 years. During this time, it notched up a number of other historic events, including a visit from Paul Revere and several from George Washington.
