Amazon MGM Studios is attempting to relaunch the Masters of the Universe franchise to mass audiences this summer. Unfortunately, the movie faces several challenges, including one big problem that nostalgia can’t fix.

"Masters of the Universe," in theaters Friday, struggles with its comic relief but is a lot of fun when it is able to just be a He-Man movie.

After a very long wait, Masters of the Universe is finally here. This time around, Nicholas Galitzine is portraying the central figure of Adam Glenn/He-Man, a former prince who travels back to his home planet of Eternia to save it from the clutches of the villainous Skeletor (Jared Leto).

The hit-or-miss screenplay — credited to four writers no less — holds back too often from tapping that ready and willing flamboyant vein, which might partially explain why it is a bit deficient in the kinds of punchy lines it needs to deliver.
