We know next to nothing about Earth’s seafloors. According to a study published May 7 in Science Advances, humans have only put eyes on 0.0001 percent of our planet’s waters deeper than the benthic zone ’s boundary, about 656 feet below the surface. And for reference, the average oceanfloor depth is around 12,080 feet.

That miniscule footprint is roughly the size of the world’s deep ocean floor that’s been seen by human eyeballs. And yet, the deep ocean covers more than half (66%) of the earth. Per a new study published in Science Advances,

Much of the ocean has never been mapped, and it is for this reason that projects like Seabed 2030 exist, to finally map every ocean. Just over a quarter of the oceans’ floor has been mapped, which is small,
