Congress previously passed a stopgap funding bill back in September, before Oct. 1, which was the last deadline to fund the government or face a shutdown. If this new CR is passed, it would prevent a shutdown before Christmas and temporarily fund the government through March 14, 2025.

The U.S. Constitution states that senators and representatives "shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States," meaning they will receive their salary even during a shutdown.
