In the decade since SpaceX arrived on the Texas coast, billionaire Elon Musk's company has created thousands of jobs near the Mexico border, launched rockets and sprung up new homes — all around an area dubbed Starbase.

Citing all the work the company has put into the region, employees are requesting a special election in Cameron County to incorporate a city.

Company petitioned Brownsville's Cameron County to have incorporation of Starbase into a town put on the ballot.

This is not even Musk’s first foray into company towns—a model that sees its roots in anti-labor organization and corporatist fascism. Farther north in Texas, near the outskirts of Austin, SpaceX operates Snailbrook, a city incorporated in 2021 and pitched as a sort of utopia for SpaceX and Boring Company employees.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is petitioning to incorporate its launch site into an official town called “Starbase, Texas," to serve as the company’s headquarters and “gateway to Mars."

SpaceX says incorporating Starbase, Texas will help the company's mission to make "South Texas the gateway to Mars."
