Nobody calls it Tinseltown anymore, but after Sunday night’s Academy Awards opened with a parade of reflective, glittery silver gowns sparkling down the 900-foot red carpet (nominees Felicity Jones and Mikey Madison mugged for photos, as did Mindy Kaling, Halle Berry and Emma Stone) you could be forgiven for reviving the old nickname.

Ariana Grande, Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez arrived in season-defining style. The carpet outside the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles was classic red. The stars who appeared at the 97th Academy Awards wore colors from all across the spectrum.
