For the first time in recorded history, downtown San Francisco was included in a tornado warning on Saturday as severe storms swept through the city, just one week after a tsunami warning triggered widespread panic in the region.

It was lifted soon after. This is thought to be the first recorded tornado warning in the area, the National Weather Service told USA TODAY. But severe weather remained a threat in the region with an atmospheric river event expected to bring gusty winds and very heavy rain,

On Saturday, meteorologists with the National Weather Service went to San Francisco to assess storm damage, then pivoted to Scotts Valley when tornado reports came in.
