The European Film Awards, Europe's equivalent of the Oscars, will head to the Greek capital of Athens for its 39th ceremony on January 16 2027. It will mark the second time the ceremony will take place at the beginning of the year rather than its previous December slot.

The European Film Awards will move to Athens, the home city of EFA-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos, for its 2027 event. The European Film Academy and the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre in Athens announced the move on Wednesday. The 39th EFA gala will be held at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in the Greek capital.

The European Film Awards is set to make its debut in Southwestern Europe in January 2027, when its 39th edition will be hosted in Athens. The award show, which were first presented in Berlin in 1988 to promote and support the European film industry,
