A company which fell victim to what's thought to be the world's biggest ever robbery is seeking to recover some of its losses by crowdsourcing online bounty hunters. Last week, hackers thought to be from North Korea's infamous Lazarus Group stole $1.46bn (£1.1bn) of cryptocurrency from ByBit, a crypto trading platform.

According to Bybit's holdings, that amounts to $1.5 billion in cryptocurrency that was stolen from Bybit and its customers, making this the largest ever cryptocurrency theft. However, as Molly White of Web3IsGoingGreat points out, the hacker can't exactly cash out $1.5 billion in Ethereum, because an amount that high would crash the value of ETH.

Lazarus Group, hackers based in North Korea, tricked Bybit CEO Ben Zhou into approving a transfer of 400,000 ethereum tokens from his company's cold wallet.

One of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world has suffered a devastating cyberattack in which it lost approximately $1.5 billion worth of Ethereum. The attack against Bybit was confirmed by the company’s CEO, Ben Zhou, who said the threat actors siphoned the exchange’s reserves, and not customer funds.

Following the revelation Friday from cryptocurrency exchange firm Bybit that hackers stole digital tokens worth about $1.5 billion – in what may be the biggest crypto heist of all time – CEO Ben Zhou wrote on X Sunday that it has replenished its reserves. Bybit was able to do this through a mix of emergency loans and large deposits.

Researchers spot the stolen funds moving through cryptocurrency wallets that were used in earlier heists attributed to North Korea's Lazarus hacking group.
