John Kuklis, a clerk at the Horseshoe Curve Lodge in Altoona, Pa., told ABC News that Mangione, who never pulled his mask down or identified himself at the hotel, was turned away because there were no clean rooms available.

The front desk worker said Mangione acted skittish and "cagey" when the suspected CEO killer tried to book a room less than a mile from where he later was arrested.

Police say after ambushing UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson, the suspect fled New York, with stops in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
