The city was officially incorporated in 1977, but its roots trace back to the early 1960s with the development of the Lakeland Amusement Park. This park, featuring attractions like the Huff 'n' Puff Railroad and a miniature railway by the Allan Herschell Company, was built around what is now known as Garner Lake. Although the amusement park has since closed, it played a significant role in shaping the city's identity and growth.
