It is a long diversion from the GOR just for the sink hole. There is much more than it in Mt Gambier. Consider overnighting in Mt Gambier for other attractions too.

Mount Gambier is quite a nice town. Go to the Umpherston Sinkhole at night to view the possums and feed them such things as strawberries and fruit. It is very dark going down to the sinkhole, but once in there it is fairly well lit. Be careful walking with small children. The possums are very cute. There is a nice wildlife park in the valley around Valley Lake, also a great place for kids. A walk or drive around Blue Lake is also worthwhile. There is another sinkhole in the centre of town with gardens and a good visitor centre along the highway through town.
